A bird strike forced American Airlines Flight 509 to return to Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) shortly after takeoff on the night of September 20, 2025.
In this video, you’ll hear the real-time ATC radio conversation between the pilots of AA509 and air traffic controllers as they coordinate the return.
The aircraft departed DFW at approximately 21:29 local time and entered a holding pattern to burn fuel before landing safely back at the airport. No injuries were reported.
