Gypsy Jazz, also known as "Jazz Manouche," originated in the 1930s in France, largely through the innovative work of guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stéphane Grappelli. Once upon a time, in the late 1960s, a small group of jazz enthusiasts decided to celebrate the legacy of Django Reinhardt, the legendary Romani guitarist who had passed away in 1953. They chose Samois-sur-Seine, where Django spent his final years, to host a modest gathering. What began as a single evening of music soon blossomed into one of the world's most celebrated festivals dedicated to Gypsy Jazz, or Jazz Manouche.

As years passed, the festival moved to the expansive grounds of the Château de Fontainebleau, providing enough space for the growing crowd of aficionados from around the globe.
