Why does our immune system weaken as we age?
In this talk, Dr. Siddharth Jhunjhunwala, Longevity India Investigator and Professor at IISc, shares insights from the BHARAT Study and on how aging reshapes both innate and adaptive immunity.
He explains how immune memory, once thought to be lifelong, begins to fade with age, and how shifts in naïve and memory T cells may reduce our ability to fight infections. Surprisingly, innate immune cells show no major structural changes, though early results suggest their function may be altered.
Dr. Jhunjhunwala discusses these findings, the unanswered questions, and future directions of the BHARAT Study—India’s first comprehensive research initiative on aging.
The BHARAT (Biomarkers of Healthy Aging, Resilience, Adversity, and Transitions) study is mapping how Indians age and identifying early, culturally relevant, and cost-effective interventions for age-related conditions.
