Gunslingers are not artificers, inventors, tinkerers, or engineers—they are pragmatists who use the best tools available to them. In settings where you encounter a gunslinger, those tools are firearms. However, in realms without firearms, gunslingers are deadly arbalists or specalists with other ranged weapons. What sets these characters apart are their focus and grit. They want to win. They need to win. Everything in them calls for them to do whatever it takes to survive in a hostile environment. Civilization doesn’t suit them.
