The Dies Irae – ‘Day of Wrath’ – is part of the Requiem, a 13th century prayer preparing for the final judgement, composed perhaps by the Franciscan Friar Thomas of Celano, or the Dominican Friar Latino Malabranca Orsini, or even by Saint Bonaventure, Bernard of Clairvaux, or Pope Gregory I. Who knows?
However, the most famous iteration, centuries later, is most certainly the majestic Mozart version, used for selling everything from racing cars to energy drinks. Verdi’s is also justly famed.
Salieri's Requiem is considerably more obscure these days, but it has a sparseness which I love, and I hope you enjoy this extract from the sequence.
