5. SOUNDBITE (Sinhalese) Voxpop (No name given):
"It is a big obstacle for the peace process. There are also problems in governance... the cost of living is eternally increasing and all this is because there is no peace in the country."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Jehan Perera, Political Analyst:
"It is very difficult to think of any progress at this time in the peace process for the simple reason that the killing of the foreign minister has been a tremendous psychological blow to the country and especially the political leadership because if a person as well-protected as the foreign minister, as prominent as the foreign minister could be assassinated in this way, then it has made all political leaders feel extremely insecure and their sense of trust in the peace process and in the cease-fire agreement that underpins the peace process, has been really shattered at this time."

13. SOUNDBITE (English) Jehan Perera, Analyst:
"So at this time there is no desire on the part of the people and of the political leadership to go back to a situation of war. And therefore I don't see the return to armed hostilities on a large scale. But it is quite possible that there will be a continuous series of targeted killings... which will erode the morale of the people and might turn the people in the direction of looking towards harder-line leaders."
New Delhi, India - August 17, 2005
14. Former Sri Lankan Prime Minister and opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe with Former Indian Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral
15. SOUNDBITE (English) Ranil Wickremesinghe, Sri Lankan Prime Minister and opposition leader:
"The resumption and active pursuance of the peace process is paramount. Time is of the essence. The President (Chandrika Kumaratunga) completes a second term of office soon. There is minority government in parliament, there is no single party of a majority. Certainly such a government is not capable of taking the peace process forward effectively. Therefore a new stable government fortified by a fresh mandate is a pre-requisite for advancing the peace process."
