YOU GAIN BY LOSING | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (April 6, 2025)

Today is the Fifth Sunday of Lent; and the gospel presents us a familiar scene.

The Pharisees and the scribes “brought a woman who had been caught in adultery” and asked Jesus: “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. Now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So, what do you say?” Jesus simply bent down, wrote on the ground, and said: “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” The Pharisees and the scribes left one by one.

We must remember, brothers and sisters, that during that time Jerusalem was under Roman Occupation. The Jews could not execute people, even if the Law of Moses prescribed it. So, Jesus must provide an answer that will not contradict either the Law of Moses or the Roman law. In other words, the elders tried to trap Jesus, and his wise response prompted them to reflect on what they were doing. The elders left because none of them was without sin, and none of them would go against the laws. Then Jesus told the woman: “Go, and from now on do not sin anymore.”

Friends, the gospel reading today continues to teach us about God’s wisdom and patience. How quick are we to judge and condemn others? How quick is Jesus to give us a new chance and hope? Are we willing to lose habits and mentalities to gain a new life?
