Episode 108 of my PhD in AI Investigation series. Today I’m thinking about translation — not just between languages, but between people and systems. When an app or an AI translates for us, it doesn’t only carry our meaning across; it changes the tone, the rhythm, the texture of how we sound. Little by little, our own voice gets replaced by something smoother and less personal.
As a PhD researcher I want to ask what happens when technology speaks for us instead of as us. If translation makes us more understood but less ourselves, what part of our identity gets lost in the process?
