Ever wondered why amorphous pharmaceuticals are so unstable when there's water around? It's because water is an excellent plasticiser, and speeds up the rate at which amorphous materials relax, ultimately leading to crystallisation. Plasticisers are also added to all sorts of plastics and polymers, to change their mechanical properties and feel to the touch. But what are they? And how do they work? Well, that's what we'll discuss in this video!
