64 years ago today in the early morning hours on May 7th 1960, the golden age of steam in my home country of America had ended with N&W Y6B 2190 having it's fire dropped making N&W the last Class 1 railroad to transition from Steam to Diesel. Union Pacific and Norfolk a d Western were the last two Class I railroads to operate Steam at large. But after a century and a half, the diesels began to become the norm and Steam was being phased out starting from the 1940’s and into 1960. May these magnificent steam engines rest in peace.
