MTC sponsored 2.5 acres training center in Arua, has become in 4 years one of the most advanced center for training small scale growers in Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). A lot of attention is given to soil & water conservation, key issues today in Uganda and Africa in General. Farmers learn details of over 30 different crops which are planted with organic fertilizer, following proper plant population, mulched, pest & disease identification and organic control. In addition over 20 different herbs and spices are cultivated and farmers receive details about how and for what use them. Medicinal herbs are collected from village Herbalist, studied and multiplied and then given back to the communities, especial attention is given to plants which may control malaria and typhoid. Shallow well construction and water usage through solar pump irrigation is part of the program. After 4 years, forage production & storage, beekeeping and value addition has been included and we look forward to improve the Food Security of Uganda with sustainable practices, better yields and value addition. With all the good soils, with a rainy season of 8 months, good water for irrigation and a lot of sun shine, we have the potential to become the "food basket" of Africa.
