Capablanca vs. The Con Man: Don't Let Go

Today, two-time US Women's Champion Jen Shahade and her son Fabian go over two games between the third World Chess Champion, Jose Raul Capablanca, and Philadelphia IM Norman Tweed Whitaker. Whitaker pulled off a nice win against Capablanca in a simul, but the Cuban World Champion got a chance for revenge a few years later.


They also discuss why you shouldn't fantastize too much about your opponent making a gross error- it can backfire.

Unfortunately, Whitaker became known for more sordid topics than this game: he was involved in a number of criminal schemes, including attempted extortion related to the Lindbergh kidnapping. His story is well documented in the book “Shady Side: The Life and Crimes of Norman Tweed Whitaker” by John S. Hilbert.
