The average age of retirement for a Major League Baseball player is around 29.5 years old and most players begin to decline in performance as they enter their 30’s and especially mid-30’s. The vast majority of players retire long before their 40th birthday. There are a few exceptions, however, although most of them experienced a massive drop-off in performance in their 40’s. At 40 years old, Babe Ruth hit just .181 in 72 games for the Boston Braves before calling it a career, although some of that can be attributed to his hard and fast lifestyle finally catching up with him. But many huge stars struggled tremendously in their 40’s and others like Mickey Mantle had to retire before getting there. But in today’s video, we’ll look at 15 incredible seasons by a few ageless wonders who put together elite performances despite being at least 40 years old at some point during the season. As long as they turned 40 during or before the season in question, the player is eligible for this list which will be counting down the Top 15 greatest seasons in the modern era by a player at least 40 years old. The rules are no player can appear on this twice on the list and I’m only including players who turned 40 in the modern era – after WW2 – because there were too many insanely great seasons by players over 40 in the early days of baseball – shoutout to Cy Young, Ty Cobb, Sam Rice and many others who still played at an elite level well into their 40’s. Also, steroid-connected players can be on the list but may fall a bit since their stats are so inflated. For this list, I’m considering both performance and age so the further into their 40’s, the better.
