In this video we'll break down some of the techniques that fingerstyle players like Tommy Emmanuel use to play this tune. We'll work through 3 progressive versions of the piece to suit players of all levels.

Version 1 is for those who are new to fingerpicking. We only ever play one note at a time - alternating between the melody notes with the fingers and bass notes with the thumb.

Version 2 uses a continuous bass pattern and more interesting rhythms in the melody. Its here where we could start using a thumbpick and gently palm muting the bass strings.

Version 3 adds double stop bass notes (strumming adjacent strings with the thumbpick) in the accompaniment and also two string chords in the melody. We also add bar chords, slides and hammer ons. Version 3 begins to approach the complexity of Tommy Emmanuel's version so the next step would be to add in one's own embellishments and make it unique!
