‘Crawlers’ of Victorian London (19th Century Street Life Documentary)

London, 1877. The richest city on Earth. But look down at the pavement.

While the wealthy danced in the gaslit ballrooms of the West End, a different world existed in the shadows of St. Giles. Here, elderly women known as "Crawlers" dragged themselves along the wet cobblestones, too weak to walk and too poor to sleep in a bed.

In this video, we use AI reconstruction to bring the haunting photography of John Thomson to life. We uncover the heartbreaking story of "Scotty"—an educated widow stripped of her dignity—and reveal the brutal reality of the Victorian Workhouse.

Why did they refuse government help? Why was a cup of used tea leaves their only comfort? And why did society let them crawl?
