Viewed in isolation, the Mercedes S-Class coupe seems like an expensive two-door sports car, with a choice of three powerful engines, a luxurious interior and high running costs. However, when you compare it to rivals like the Bentley Continental GT and Aston Martin DB9, the big Merc starts to look like a bit of a bargain.

For the performance on offer, the S-Class coupe's running costs aren't actually that bad. Yes, compared to a Ford Focus hatchback, a lowly 30mpg doesn't look great, but when you take into account the powerful engines and sporty handling, it's actually pretty impressive. Besides, if you can afford the car's list price, the high fuel consumption is unlikely to worry you.
