Democratic leaders want Oregon voters to decide whether to repeal new taxes and fees passed by the Legislature to help fund the transportation system sooner rather than later.
Democrats said Wednesday they will introduce a bill during this year’s short legislative session, which begins next month, to move the statewide vote on a referendum approved for the ballot from November’s general election to May’s primary.
The controversial transportation bill was passed by Democrats last summer through a special session.
Once the governor signed the bill, Republicans led an effort to gather signatures and put the proposal to voters and on the ballot this coming November.
Until Wednesday, leading Democrats had said they would repeal the bill before it made it to voters. But on Wednesday, Democrats announced they would instead schedule a referendum for May 19 after a legislative legal analysis concluded that the bill could not be repealed and must be referred to voters.
