On 24 December 1934, Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra assembled in the Camden Church Studio, New Jersey, to record two major works: the Sibelius Violin Concerto, with Jascha Heifetz as soloist, and later that same day, Rachmaninoff's "Paganini Rhapsody" with the composer at the piano. In the event the Sibelius recording did not go well, with Heifetz and Stokowski evidently disagreeing about the balance between orchestra and violin. Heifetz had a point, as can be heard in the first movement where some passages for solo viola were actually louder than the solo violin.
In any event, Heifetz refused to approve the 78s and his own set of test pressings languished in the archive for several decades, before finally being released in 1999 in a 12-CD boxed set of Philadelphia Orchestra recordings entitled "The Centennial Collection." There was a further single CD release of the work on the 'Guild Historical' label in 2015. Here it is again for an audience that missed it the first time round, representing the only collaboration ever between Heifetz and Stokowski!
Incidentally, Stokowski was always asking recording engineers for "more reverberation" and "more bass," so in accordance with his stated wishes, a small amount of 'tweaking' has taken place in this upload!
