Apotropaic Magic and House Protection | Evidence of Witchcraft?

Were our Ancestors Witches? This is a much debated question. Can we say that witchcraft was purely a modern revival, or is there evidence of people performing acts of witchcraft and magic in the past? Brian Hoggard suggests in his book, Magical House Protection, Evidence of Counter Witchcraft, that we can answer some of these questions by looking at the real archaeological evidence left in old houses, that may indicate that superstition and witchcraft practices went hand in hand. Concealed Shoes, Dead Cats, and strange Witch Marks, like those found at Creswell Crags, leave us some physical evidence of strange magical acts which were quite widespread from the 13th right up until the early 20th Century in some instances. Sadly we now have little little understanding of what these acts were for. Can we see evidence of Witchcraft in Society that has rarely been discussed? Is there any logical explanation for some of these finds? It's certainly interesting, and leaves us wondering what these ritual acts of Apotropaic Magic were about?
