The PhD doesn’t make you feel smart.
It teaches you how dumb you are.
Not once.
Not twice.
But in successive moments when the world collapses around you:
• When you realize the thing you thought you understood is far more complicated.
• When your results don’t make sense.
• When stability disappears, and so does your confidence.
Each time, you lose a little faith in yourself.
And then you keep walking anyway.
One day at a time.
One step at a time.
Not because you “understand the world.”
But because you’ve learned you don’t need to.
That’s the real gift of a PhD.
It doesn’t make you brilliant.
It makes you more stoic.
It teaches you to keep going when everything feels uncertain.
