“I don’t think I deserve these benefits,” said the retiring servicemember, “I’m rated at 60% disabled, but I can walk and drive to see friends, cook over a BBQ, and toss a baseball around. My buddy is in pain all the time and only got 30%.”
Does this type of veteran imposter syndrome sound familiar? As military spouses we watch our servicemember normalize their aches and pains. When it’s time to transition or retire, they feel guilt over the ratings, label, and payout from the VA for disability benefits.
SpouseLink livestream guest, Paul Lawrence, Ph.D., served as the Undersecretary of Benefits for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs from 2018 to 2021.
He’s heard it all.
In August 2022, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shared that 4.9 million veterans, or 27 percent, had a service-connected disability. Most of them are undereducated on how to navigate and survive the VA System. Paul’s message to these veterans and future retiring and transitioning servicemembers is that they have earned these benefits. During today’s livestream he’ll share his vast knowledge on navigating the VA.
