M40 Gen II - Stainless Steel Internals - Overview, Shooting, and Through the Scope

Howdy to all you classic rifle lovers! On the mat for the day is the classic Remington 700, SSA build. Chambered in .308 Win, this is a mostly-original M40.

Mounted atop the rifle is our latest update to the old M40 Green Scope. A few details:

This rifle has a long and storied history, longer than I can recount here. Suffice to say - the Marines have kept the M40 name alive for quite a while.

Step 1 is boresighting. With a bolt action rifle, bore sighting is just about the easiest, least equipment-heavy way to get on paper. Remove the bolt, put the rifle in a stable rest, look down the bore. Swap your view between the optic and the bore, dialing until the scope is pointed at the same thing that your bore is framing.

Next step is to leave the paper right where it started for boresighting: 25 yards. This is a very forgiving distance to start at, and is the easiest way to get on paper. Shoot and dial until your shots are landing in the bullseye. Once they're right about where you need them to be, you can move the paper out to a real zeroing distance. 25 Yards serves as a distance where you can see whether or not you're in the ballpark.

The Redfield Jr base has external windage. The scope is mechanically centered when we send it out, so I wanted to keep the scope centered (on windage) and make the initial rough adjustment using the external windage of the mount. That will preserve as much adjustment as possible for farther shots. Just keep in mind - move the rear of the scope/mount in the direction you'd like the impact to go.

Our real goal was to zero at 300 yards. This is a good distance for CMP shooting, and gives the bullet a chance to stretch its legs. Initial shots were low and left, so I had to dial a bit up and right. With the corrections made, the rifle was punching the bullseye.

1000 yards was a fun shot to attempt, but not what this load was meant for. This load was constructed on the recommendation of another shooter, and meant for CMP matches (600 yard maximum). The bullet goes transonic around 800 yards, and is completely unreliable at 1000 yards. Had to give it a shot, though.

Another point of note - our overall length on the cartridge was at the maximum (or slightly more) than the box magazine could take. Sometimes the rounds just wouldn't feed properly. For most of the video, I was single-loading.

To finish off, there's a short view through the scope. This was filmed with a cellphone, and is not nearly as good as the human eye. This is the reticle found in the green M40 scope, but not the one found in the black M40.
