A BRCA gene test determines if people carry an inherited gene mutation—BRCA1 or BRCA2. A positive result, in either one of these two breast cancer susceptibility genes, means a woman is at a higher risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer, compared with the general population. Men with certain inherited BRCA gene mutations also face an increased risk of breast cancer. However, testing positive for the gene mutation does not necessarily mean one will develop cancer.
