This rifle is definitely the peak of 1940s consumer changes. The post WW2 boom was a period of rapid change in consumer demand for styles of rifles. The lever action was on its way out for most hunters, and the bolt action was in. The familiarity built with mass mobilization during the war made this style much more appealing to the average hunter.
The 721/722 basically came about to meet this demand with a reliable, but much less expensive rifle than the model 70 Winchester. ironically, the 300 savage fits this transition period particularly well as it was made obsolete by the success of the 308 Winchester and was removed from the Remington lineup soon after the .308 took off.
