Driving in Italy is a little similar to driving in the US, except for the differences! It's a big topic really.
Before you watch my "narrated dash-cam view", I highly recommend you check this video out: IMO, the best all-around video on driving in Italy: • Driving in Italy - tips, tricks and helpfu... It covers all the practical details, and then some, in a very short concise video. Kudos to the creator.
If you are only going to watch one video on this topic, this: • Driving in Italy - tips, tricks and helpfu... is the one.
Now, on to my video, which is more about seeing some of these things on different types of roads in real time, as they are driven.
First half: a couple road surface types you see, and commentary I thought useful for each. Also in the first half are a couple typical road hazards (bicycles, horses, tractors, trucks).
Second half: a mash-up showing different roundabout sizes and some things too keep in mind depending on the size. In this second half the two main types of "electronic policemen" are also pointed out.
All in all it's a half hour of driving in Umbria, so it does not dig into high traffic situations like getting out of the Rome airport in a rental car with a stick shift! So this video I think is more of a primer. You will see the autostrada (interstates) do not have wide berms, and the "back roads" of Italy are also narrow and vary in roughness quite a bit.
One might say driving in Italy is similar to driving in the US in that one does much better if they can anticipate what can happen, but the difference is the types of unexpected things which can come up are different, and the space and time you have to deal with them are different.
So hopefully this half hour narrated Sunday morning drive in Umbria will give some idea of what to expect in the countryside.
