The cell phone in your pocket, the language you speak, and the human species itself all have ancestors near and distant, and a long history of trial and error by which new variants arose, had varying degrees of success, and passed down some of their characteristics to future generations. That is, they evolved. I will present a vision of the “Second Science” – the generalized science of evolution – that applies with equal force all of life and its cultural products.
Mark Vellend is a professor in the Biology Department at the University of Sherbrooke in Québec, Canada, where he teaches and conducts research in plant ecology. He is a member of the Royal Society of Canada, and author of the book “Everything Evolves: Why Evolution Explains More than We Think, from Proteins to Politics”.
TIES NEW BOOK:
Written by members of the Teacher Institute for Evolutionary Science who have tackled the topic of evolution in their classroom for decades, "On Teaching Evolution" offers practical advice and sample lesson plans for fellow science teachers. Learn about what inspired them to love teaching evolution and the experiences that help guide their teaching practices.
“If you can read this, thank a teacher” So runs a favorite t-shirt slogan. This book inspires me to coin a variant: “If you understand why you exist and rejoice in that understanding, thank a science teacher.” More specifically, thank a teacher of evolution." - From foreward by Richard Dawkins
