This is a series of 4 online tutorials, 1 hour each, that covers various topics in density functional theory (DFT). My target audience includes experimentalist with zero background of DFT, as well as theoreticians who wish to learn more about how to make DFT more relevant to real-life applications.
This tutorial, "Part 1: The very basics", gives a brief historical overview of DFT and its role in revolutionising material science and chemistry. I will (1) demonstrate DFT's success stories via several highly cited, and also recent, papers; (2) explain what DFT is capable of offering to experimentalists.
