It’s mid-October in Ontario and tire season is here. I just mounted my winter set a couple weeks early while the car was in for brakes—so let’s quickly cover when to switch, which tire type makes sense for your driving, and the real costs (mount/balance, TPMS, and rim options). What you’ll learn
Exactly when to swap: The 7°C rule—once temps consistently hover at ~7°C (plus overnight frost/black ice), it’s time. For most of Southern Ontario that’s late Oct–early Nov; go earlier if you drive into lake-effect zones.
Tire types decoded:
Full Winter (❄️/mountain symbol): Soft compound + siping for max cold grip—my choice outside big city cores.
All-Season (incl. “all-weather” variants): Works if you’re mostly in the salted Toronto core and rarely hit deep snow.
M+S (Mud & Snow): Better for trucks/SUVs and job sites; not as strong as true winters on ice.
Real-world Ontario costs: Typical mount & balance (swap rubber on alloys) runs $100–$160+ depending on shop/time of year.
TPMS & wheels: Keeping winters on your factory alloys keeps sensors happy; a second alloy winter set can save time long-term and avoids debris collecting behind steelies.
Use case guidance: City (Toronto) vs lake-effect belts (Goderich and north)—why I run true winters for those surprise whiteouts.
Quick tips
Book your swap before the first cold snap—shops fill fast.
Document tread depth and tire dates; rubber hardens with age even if tread looks good.
If you tow or hit job sites, M+S can be a smart compromise—just know the limits in heavy snow.
