Periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) Surgery: Preserving the Hip

#PeriacetabularOsteotomy (PAO) is a #hip-preserving surgery for patients with #HipDysplasia : when the hip socket is too shallow to properly support the #femoralhead Instead of replacing the joint, the surgeon reshapes and reorients the socket to provide better coverage and stability.

🔹 Step 1: Carefully cut the bone around the acetabulum (hip socket).
🔹 Step 2: Rotate the socket into the correct position to better cover the femoral head.
🔹 Step 3: Secure the bone with screws so it can heal in its new alignment.

✅ The goal: reduce pain, improve stability, and delay arthritis or hip replacement.

It’s a technically demanding procedure, but for the right patient, PAO can be life-changing, allowing return to daily activities and sometimes even sports.
