This case happened in Spring Valley, Rockland County, on July 12th. 32-year-old Edwin L. Pickering was suspected of an armed robbery with an orange box cutter-style knife. When the officer moved in, the suspect resisted arrest.
The officer executed an effective top control to restrain and disarm him on the ground. The main concern is that in this position, the officer becomes vulnerable—he has tunnel vision and loses awareness of his surroundings.
It’s important to note the difference between sport Jiu-Jitsu and operational top control. In competition, the focus is on points and submissions. In the field, an officer in full gear uses weight distribution and positional control to restrain.
