Ana delves into the past to explain how scientists consider the origin of life; examining our biology can provide glimpses of molecules billions of years ago. She discusses her own lab work exploring the hypothesis that light provided the necessary means for life to begin. Ana Delia Parejo Vidal is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Chemistry whose passion for scientific research began as a young girl in her hometown of Granada Spain. She works under de leadership of Professor Mattanjah de Vries, and their research focuses on developing state-of-the-art spectroscopy instrumentation to elucidate the photochemical processes that established specific nucleobases as the building blocks of all life on earth. Ana is a curious and open-minded woman whose enthusiasm for science and cultural exploration has led to pursue research opportunities across 3 continents. She earned her B.S. from the University of Granada, spending the final year of her undergraduate program as an international fellow at UCSB. After returning home to earn to earn a Masters in Science from the University of Granada, where she was recognized with the Award in Excellence in the Internationalization of Students she decided to return to UCSB to pursue her Ph.D. in Chemistry. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
