With springtime comes the need to work on, and fix track for the coming season. This year there has been a surge of ballast trains on Canadian Pacific powered by solid sets of SD40-2s and Herzog hoppers. We'll see duos and trios of 40s roaring up grade, and racing along the mainline. Such notable scenes are a trio of units roaring upgrade with loads in run 8, a trio doing track speed on the Paynesville Sub, search light signals, and chasing along the River Sub on the former Milwaukee Road.
With many of the SD40-2s having been retired, or in storage, these trains make for a welcomed sight along the rails. They should still run for a few more weeks due to ongoing projects on the former Soo Line Detroit Lakes Sub. CP is also running a great deal of welded rail trains for track projects; its nice to see the railroad actively investing and upgrading its track!
