In this video we rehabilitate an overgrown hoop house. The Vines were planted in March 2020 and not lowered until we pruned in August 2020. This gave us a unique opportunity to show you most if not all of the scenarios you will encounter over a season of growing, pruning, and trellising with the lower and lean method of pruning.
We dive into two 64’ rows of indeterminate tomatoes and walk you through many scenarios that include:
Tomato vine structure and parts
Damage vine repair
Saving a topped vine
Repairing cut trellis line
Pollination
Making holes to work in
Roller hook operation
Moving the vine in a race track pattern along the base of the plant
How to work past the row to turn the vine along the race track pattern
How to untangle vines
Keeping vines out of trusses, hoop house ceilings, and trellises
Pruning a vine top to bottom
Developing new growth
When to prune flower clusters
Developing new tomato clusters
When to cut and when to leave leafs on the vine
Pruning the harvest zone
Improving airflow to prevent pest and fungal issues
How to choose which vine to keep on a forked vine
When to remove a dead and diseased vine
When to stop pruning
Working efficiencies to save labor hours and wear on your body
Learning what the vine needs for season long production
Learning that vines are tough and forgiving
Finding your own style of tomato maintenance
Many of these scenarios seem the same but offer different points of views on what to do during the pruning process.
