A piece written by Brian Brady on the day itself.
We had a Eucharistic Procession in Dublin's city centre yesterday on Sept 7th. It was a phenomenal day for Dublin and for Ireland yesterday as we processed with Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament around some of Dublin's busiest streets. There was a Great sense of Joy by everyone who took part.
People on the side walks were very respectable also, It was so nice to see some kneel and more bless themselves as Jesus passed by.
Someone commented on the day "Dublin City stopped for Jesus, the Giver of Life yesterday"…!!!! 🙌🙌🙌
How it started .Last year we organised a Eucharistic procession in Dublin on the North Side (St Peter’s Church Phibsboro, down O’Connell St, Henry st, to St. Mary of the Angels Church, Church street, and it was a wonderful experience, as we joyfully processed with our Lord Jesus. Fr. Brendan Kealy and Fr. Fergal Cummins led the procession, there were approx 1000 people with us, we also had bag-pipers playing, we prayed as we walked and sung hymns on the way it was a wonderful occasion and there was a great response from onlookers as many people blessed themselves, others knelt as we passed by.
Afterwards We were asked on many occasions, ‘when can we do this again? We need this for our city and country!’
We were told later (and it makes sense) that the streets were being rid of evil as Jesus passes through the City in a procession like this. We also organised a Eucharistic procession in Athlone on the 16th March, the Eve of St Patrick’s Day, where we had many in attendance over the Shannon River and around the city.
We have a really great team working with us and it is growing, incl Musicians, Children’s Rosary organisers, Mens Rosary organisers and our Two Wonderful Priests! There are also many more Priests interested in getting involved in future Processions.
With all this in mind and in realising the goodness a Eucharistic procession like this can do, it became like a calling to us "why not have more of them"? Especially when we have two, I would say totally committed Priests like Fr. Brendan and Fr. Fergal who are always ready to step out for the Lord.
The procession last year was held on the 14th Sept (Feast of the Exaltation of The Cross),
This year the inspiration to have the Procession a week earlier on the 7th of September came because of the canonisation of two young men who are now Saints Carlo acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati.
After a wet and dreary morning and the time for the procession came the clouds lifted and the sun shone for much of the 5.5km route as we witnessed publicly to onlookers that our Catholic faith is 'alive and well'.
Part of the inspiration was also in addition to the canonisation of these two young men in Rome; we thought it to be a 'Golden Opportunity’ to invite and encourage our youth to come out witness & celebrate, their Catholic faith, where sadly many youth have lost hope, peace, and joy - and in turn only The Catholic Faith can restore and fulfil these young people’s lives.
So we invited some younger people to come join us our organising committee as we felt the best people to encourage young people is other young people; thankfully they did and it has proven to be very fruitful to do so- our procession had people of all ages, and the youth were especially present yesterday! Onlookers would have witnessed a very different image of the Catholic faith, from what the media portray it to be. 'Courage is contagious', and the youth (and indeed all ages), stepped out in faith yesterday, to show ‘we are proud to be Catholics’.
It was the first time in nearly 100 years that the Jesus in the Eucharist was processed over O’Connell Bridge… the last time was the Eucharistic congress in 1932! the Eucharistic Congress 1932 was indelibly ingrained in the memories of people of my mothers time especially Dubliners, because it was the 1st real uplift after the 1st World war, the civil war here nd the great depression of 1929.
