Being a Marine

“You were a Marine?” she asked with a start
“You must be pretty tough, wasn’t it super hard?”
The memories start to fill my head, the good times and the bad
A smile teases at my lips, even if my eyes are sad

Service will always change you, no matter which branch you serve
Structure, orders, impossible goals, changes at every turn
But we faced those things together, never without our team
Bond formed through effort, sweat and tears which most have never seen

But there’s something that a Marine holds deep which is difficult to set aside
Something more, settled deep in our souls, a solidity we can not hide
It’s born in that three months of bootcamp when it seemed we could hardly survive
The constant barrage of knowledge and pain determined to keep us alive

Then to the Fleet where we find it’s all true no matter what task we’re assigned
Not brothers and sisters but all Marines putting our lives on the line
Its “Honor, Courage and Commitment” that still effects everything that we do
It’s a willingness to do whatever must be done to see the current mission through

That commitment extends to the Oath that we made the Constitution to always defend
For “God, Country and Corps” still ring in our hearts, a dedication that never will end

Not all who run this gauntlet are still Marines in their hearts
They’s made the choice to turn away, of “Honor” they want no part
But that’s not a choice I could ever make those values are etched in my soul
A Marine I will be until my dust fades away even my soul will report to the Corps.
