DR Congo News LIVE: M23 Rebels Say They Have Taken Control of the Key Eastern City of Goma | N18G

The M23 rebel group in Democratic Republic of Congo seized the eastern town of Minova, a main supply route for the provincial capital Goma, a local governor and a rebel leader said on January 21, as the army reported fighting on all fronts. The Tutsi-led M23 group has been waging a renewed insurgency in the Central African country's east since 2022. Congo and the United Nations accuse neighbouring Rwanda of backing the group with its own troops and weapons. Rwanda denies this.
The M23 is the latest in a series of groups of ethnic Tutsi-led insurgents to rise up against Congolese forces. The group, named after the March 23 date of a 2009 accord that ended a previous Tutsi-led revolt, accuses the government of not living up to the peace deal to fully integrate Congolese Tutsis into the army and administration.
