The Ghaznavid dynasty was a Persian Muslim ruling family that controlled parts of Persia, Khorasan, and northwest India from 977 to 1186. It was founded by Sabuktigin, who took over Ghazna after his father-in-law's death. His son, Mahmud of Ghazni, expanded the empire eastward to the Indus River and westward to Rey and Hamadan. However, under Mas'ud I, they started losing territory to the Seljuk Empire. Eventually, they lost Ghazni to the Ghurids and fled to Lahore. In 1186, Lahore was taken by Muhammad of Ghor, ending the Ghaznavid rule.
