Der Kongowea-Markt ist einer der größten und lebendigsten Freiluftmärkte für Frischwaren in Ostafrika und befindet sich im Vorort Kongowea von Mombasa. Der Markt wurde 2016 für ca. 400 Mio. KSh neu aufgebaut und umfasst moderne Stände, Entwässerung, Beleuchtung, Parkplätze, Videoüberwachung und asphaltierte Zufahrtsstraßen. Der Kongowea-Markt erhält Frischwaren aus ganz Kenia und Tansania und verteilt sie an Hotels und Städte entlang der Küste – bis zu 45 Tonnen Abfall täglich, der von Kreis-LKWs abtransportiert wird. Kurz gesagt: Der Kongowea-Markt ist eine dynamische Mischung aus Kultur, Handel und Gemeinschaft – lebenswichtig nicht nur für Mombasa, sondern für die gesamte Küstenregion.
