The Carriages Were Built 1957 For Coaching stock at BREL at Ashford Kent.
They then entered service on the Midland region of BR being hauled by steam, diesel and electric locomotives .
In 1966 the 3rd rail electrification was completed between London and Bournemouth but remained non electrified beyond Bournmouth to Weymouth.
A number of MK1 coaches were selected ( including 4375 and 4382) for conversion at BREL , York in 1966 for use on the line between Bournemouth and Weymouth.
The coaches were modified by having the toilets removed and a driver's cab fitted and new electrics and brake system installed.
Number 4375 was remembered to 76301 and 4382 to 76302, and together were BSK 76836 and FK formed a four carriage unit 417 designated 4TC.
The units then operated from London Victoria to Bournemouth being propelled by an electric powered Class 431 four coach EMU to Bournemouth being propelled by an electric locomotive hauled the 4TC set to Weymouth.It was therefore unnecessary to run the locomotive round the train as the leading cab of the 4TC set could operate the locomotive at the rear of the train in push pull mode.
However, the line between Bournemouth and Weymouth was electrified in 1966 and the 4 TC units were replaced with more modern units.
Two 4TC sets including 417 were reserved for on charter trains after refurbishment.
In December 1997 unit 417 was sold to a group of railway enthusiast who operated the train on ad-hoc charter work.
In 1999 the 4TC set was moved to Datmoor Railway in Devon and was subsequently used on special events on the railway.
Our MK1 Carriages Were brought to Bellingham from Oakhampton South Devon In 2011.After careful refurbishment by Hertitage centre volunteer s and local tradesmen, Carriages Tea Room opened in March 2012.
We prepare and cook all of the food which we serve on the train using locally sourced ingredients where possible.Our scones are made fresh every morning.
