Gambling Journal Club November 2022: How to win betting on horses and sports - an interview with betting market analyst Joseph Buchdahl
In this webinar, we want to ask questions about professional gamblers, and how they differ from those that develop a problem with gambling. Hosted by Sydney University's GambleAware clinical supervisor, Dr Christopher Hunt, we will hear a pre-recorded interview with betting market analyst, Joseph Buchdahl, who will talk about how professional gamblers identify "value bets" and how this differs from problem gambling. Dr Hunt then discusses the interview with his colleague, Dr Dylan Pickering, and answers questions on wagering gambling and how to work with it in clinical settings.

Speakers Bios
Joseph Buchdahl: is a science graduate of Trinity College, Cambridge University and former environmental scientist. His interest-turned-career as a sports betting analyst was sparked in 1991 being a bet runner for Patrick Veitch, a prodigal mathematician and now Britain's most feared horse racing gambler. In his quest to emulate his former employer, Buchdahl has spent 20 years collecting and analysing sports data to find a profitable advantage. Since 2001 Football-data.co.uk has provided historical results and odds data to help others achieve the same goal. Buchdahl's books on sports betting, tipping, gambling and investing tell the story of how my views about these subjects have evolved during that time, and a means of sharing what he's learnt during this journey. You can follow him on Twitter at @12Xpert.
Christopher Hunt: is the Senior Clinical Supervisor at the University of Sydney's GambleAware clinics, which are responsible for co-ordinating government-funded gambling treatment throughout Central, Western and South-Western Sydney, operating out of the University's Brain and Mind Centre. Dr Hunt first began work at the University in the then-titled Gambling Treatment Clinic in early 2007. Since then, he has gained wide recognition for his work with problem gamblers. He has published work on clinical phenomena observed in gambling clients, has been asked to testify before both federal and state parliamentary committees on gambling, has been extensively quoted on gambling in local, national and international media, and has written several pieces on gambling for lay audiences. He is also responsible for co-ordinating clinical supervision to psychologists and counsellors who are working in the gambling field throughout Sydney ,and organises training seminars for mental health practitioners working in the field of problem gambling and information seminars for the general public.
Dylan Pickering is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Gambling Treatment & Research Clinic, within the Brain & Mind Centre and the School of Psychology, at the University of Sydney. Dr Pickering has almost 10 years of professional experience in developing and evaluating gambling harm minimisation programs. He completed his PhD in 2019 which investigated a person-centered conceptualisation and measurement model for recovery in Gambling Disorder. This work led him to develop the Recovery Index for Gambling Disorder (RIGD) which has been adopted internationally in clinical and research settings. Dr Pickering’s research also focusses on understanding the structure and impact of emerging gambling technologies such as skill-based gaming and Daily Fantasy Sports. He is interested in understanding how new technologies can be leveraged and applied to facilitate safer gambling practices, for both online wagering and land-based formats. Dr Pickering uses multiple channels to disseminate his research (~50 publications in total), including academic journal publications, written technical reports and policy submissions for government and industry, conferences presentations and invited talks and workshops.
