Early onset idiopathic generalized dystonia (IGD), previously known as primary idiopathic generalized dystonia, is a progressive neurological clinical syndrome characterized by sustained muscle contractions and abnormal posture associated with twisting and repetitive movements.
Medical treatment consists of oral medicines such as trihexyphenidyl, clonazepam, baclofen, tetrabenazine, etc; and botulinum toxin injection. Deep brain stimulation can help in certain patients. Levodopa generally does not help much, however, if there is a dramatic response to levodopa therapy, one should consider a diagnosis of dopa-responsive dystonia.
