A Journey of Heart: Temple Israel Detroit Visits Shalva in Jerusalem

Join us for a look at a deeply moving visit as our friends from Temple Israel of Detroit, led by the legendary Rabbi Harold Loss, arrived at the Shalva National Center in Jerusalem.

From the moment they arrived, it was a journey of connection and hope. After watching the powerful film recounting Shalva’s history, the delegation was warmly welcomed by President Kalman Samuels and senior leadership.

The visit held immense emotional weight. The group shared a poignant moment with Yoav Engel, director of Shalva's Sports Center. Just recently, Yoav's son, Ofir—who was released after 54 harrowing days in Gaza—had visited the Detroit community, making this reunion incredibly meaningful.

Rabbi Loss and the group toured the expansive facility, visiting the therapeutic pools, the sports complex, the breathtaking rooftop view of Jerusalem, and the tender spaces in the dorms where Shalva’s children rest.

The absolute highlight of the visit was meeting the inspiration behind it all: Yossi Samuels. Meeting Yossi, who is blind, deaf, and mute, reminded everyone of the indomitable spirit upon which Shalva was built.

Looking to the future, the group learned of critical plans for a new diagnostic and treatment center Shalva is establishing in Ashkelon to heal the deep wounds of those impacted by the war.
