Hungry Foreigner Eating Vietnamese Street Food in Hoi An
Hoi An market - https://g.co/kgs/7M1Ui5m
From the Hotel I took a Grab taxi. It was a short trip to Hoi An night market. The driver was very friendly and spoke in good English.
Just walked a few steps at the market and the lady at the front of the market offered me to buy a T-shirt. Since I was in need for a T-shirt, I decided to have a go. She walked me to a shop where her sister was selling clothing, including some T-shirts. I chose a simple, Vietnamese-style T-shirt. I tried to bargain, and that was very easy. We agreed on $6 price, but since the lady was honest, I gave her $8 instead. We also had a little laugh with these ladies.
Then I thought I needed to buy a handheld fan. I stopped at the place I walked past when buying a T-shirt. After a while, I found a perfect fan and managed to bargain a little. I paid only $4. Also, I found a fan, that was not working at that time. So I said, no working, no money. The lady laughed so hard. It was another fun moment with the seller.
Next, I was heading out of the market to the road where I could find food. On the way out I have been stopped a few times and offered to buy this and that. At one shop I stopped because a lady wanted to give me her business card. Just to get out of there quickly, I took that business card. Finally, I reached the entrance/exit. At this point, I saw the same lady who took me to her sister's shop and another woman who offered me a leather belt and wallet. Then they asked me about the business card that I took from one shop. I gave it to them and they told me don't buy from her but instead buy from them. At that point, I wasn't sure what was going on.
Finally out on the road and enjoying the surroundings I found the first stop where I bought Banh Trang Nuong. A traditional Vietnamese rice paper with some fillings. It was very delicious and also the seller put a lot of green onions on it. I paid only $1.60. I think prices in Hoi An a little high, that is why I felt that it was a little expensive.
Making my way along the river I met a lady that was offering a boat ride. But I thought it was a little too late for that because I wanted to have more food before it got dark.
I crossed the river by bridge. Enjoying nice scenery around and at the water, I spotted a place that was selling sausages. I said: why not? Believe it or not, that was a good choice. Very delicious sausage and a friendly seller who spoke good English. Again, the price was a little high, I thought.
Now, it was a time for refreshment. Just a few steps away I saw a a lady selling natural juices. It looked like it was homemade. I bought pomegranate juice because I drank that a long time ago. It cost me $1.60 for a small bottle. I think it was well worth the money. Because it’s healthy and delicious.
Time for the next snack. Next stop was not too far away. I spotted another lady, that was selling some sort of pancakes. That was a cup pancake with coconut drizzles, peanuts, banana, and condensed milk with chocolate on top. If not for the condensed milk and chocolate, that cake would be too dry because of the coconut drizzles. But it was a delicious and sweet snack. It only cost me $1.20. I had this cup pancake in some sort of park where kids were flying a kite.
Now I was getting full, but wanted to try one more snack. I walked for a little more and found a lady selling grilled meat. I thought why not have Bolalot in Hoi An. The skewer was already pre-cooked. She only needed to warm that up on the grill. And bolalot turned black from green. But it was still delicious.
Finally, I was full and ready to get back to the hotel, but the shop owner next to where I had bolalot, asked me if I was a vlogger. After talking for a little, I said let’s go and review your shop. Inside she showed me around, we had a little laugh and she was so surprised that I could speak Vietnamese.
Finally, the mission at this market was completed. I enjoyed every single stop, food and drink that I had. Also friendly people of Hoi An.
