The Ferrari 288 Gran Turismo Omologata or homologated Grand Tourer or simply GTO is the homologated version of the Ferrari 308 GTB and it was in production from 1984 to 1987 and built in Ferrari's Maranello factory.

It’s one of only three Ferraris to ever wear the GTO name - the Ferrari 250 GTO, the 288 GTO and the 599 GTO.

The "288" refers to the GTO's 2.8 litre V8 engine and unlike the 308's 2.9 L engine, the GTO's V8 was mounted longitudinally taking up what was the 308's rear trunk space. This was done to make room for the twin turbochargers and intercoolers.

The engine produced 400 PS at 7,000 rpm and 366 lb⋅ft of torque at 3,800 rpm and was linked to a 5-speed manual transmission.

This gave the GTO a 0-60 mph time in around 5 seconds and Ferrari claimed 0-125 mph in just 15 seconds with a top speed of 189 mph. This made it one of the fastest street-legal production cars of its time.

Several Formula 1 drivers were offered GTOs by Ferrari and the very last one of the 272 units built was gifted to Niki Lauda by Enzo Ferrari himself.
