How to Wash Cloth Diapers by Hand | 2020 Flats and Handwashing Challenge - Day 4 - Wash Routine

Check out my cloth diaper hand washing routine! Hand washing cloth diapers (flats and covers) doesn’t have to be complicated or super time consuming. I’ve found it to be the easiest part of the challenge actually! This year in particular I’m stripping my routine down to the basics since I’m only washing 1 diaper a day! I have found hand washing to get my diapers CLEANER than my washing machine when trying to wash just a single diaper. It’s so challenging to figure out how to get cloth diapers clean when there isn’t enough for an actual load. I honestly think handwashing is a viable option!


How to hand wash cloth diapers using bucket and your hands!:
1) unfold diapers from flat fold before washing
2)Cold Rinse- 50 plunges/ squeezes
3) Drain
4) Hot wash with Castile soap bar (just run it under the water for a few seconds until water is milky- rub the bar directly on soiled areas as needed)-50 plunges/ squeezes
5) soak for around 30 Minutes
6) Plunge/squeeze 50 more times
7) Drain
8) Rinse each item separately with shower head (or in sink).
9) cold water rinse-20 plunges/squeezes (if using Castile soap, water should be clear not milky- if using detergent, there should be few suds left and flats shouldn’t feel “slimy” - if they are repeat the rinse process).
10) Drain
11) wring our flats
12) squeeze then roll covers and boosters in a towel to get out excess water
13) hang flats and covers on the drying rack

Tips:
wash first thing in the AM. Diapers dry much faster outside in the sun.
washing 1-3 flats at a time is easiest. More than that it becomes difficult to agitate by hand. I recommend washing 2x/day if your child is in diapers full time. If that’s not possible I would separate the diapers into 2 loads.
