Defense Trial: Ex-Governor Sonko’s Witness Distances Him from JamboPay Deal

In the ongoing hearing, Former County Attorney Lydia Kwamboka took the stand, shedding light on the origins of the controversial Web Tribe/JamboPay revenue collection contract. Kwamboka clarified that the electronic payment platform had been introduced by the now-defunct Nairobi City Council long before Sonko assumed office.

She told the court that her role as County Attorney was strictly limited to offering legal advice in civil matters, emphasizing that her office had no authority to initiate criminal proceedings. Kwamboka’s testimony appeared to support Sonko’s argument that his administration sought to discontinue legacy systems tied to past corruption and inefficiency.
