The Western Australian Marine Science Institution (WAMSI) is an independent organisation developing the information for better decisions about our marine environment.
WAMSI partner organisations formed themselves into the largest collective marine science capability in Australia. Since 2006, they have worked together to deliver integrated projects that have changed the way the marine environment is managed.
The Western Australian Marine Science Institution has delivered two of the largest marine research programs in Australia.
The $30 million Kimberley Marine Research Program, supported through the Kimberley Science and Conservation Strategy, includes 25 integrated projects delivered by over 90 researchers collaborating between nine different WAMSI partner organisations. The program is building the first regional understanding of the Kimberley marine wilderness to underpin effective marine-park planning.
The WAMSI Dredging Science Node is a leading example of strategic use of environmental offsets, with support from four companies toward a $19 million program enabling 81 researchers from ten organisations to collaborate in making a step change in the understanding of dredging effects on the marine environment.
