This weekend, Fen and I headed out to North Sylamore Creek Trail in the Ozark National Forest for a simple winter camping trip. We only hiked about three miles in and out, but the goal wasn’t distance — it was slowing down and enjoying a quiet night in the woods.
After hiking to one of my favorite campsites along the creek, I got a fire going and cooked dinner directly in the coals. No stove, no backpacking meals — just a foil packet with coho salmon, potatoes, onion, asparagus, rosemary, and lemon black pepper butter cooked over the fire. Sitting by the fire and sharing some of it with Fen was easily the highlight of the trip.
The weather gave us a little bit of everything — cold winter temps, sunny skies on Friday, and an overcast, chilly morning packing up on Saturday. It was a simple overnight, but exactly what we needed.
Trip Details:

• Distance: ~5 miles round trip
• Duration: 1 night
• Season: Winter (December 12th and 13th)

Thanks for coming along on another adventure with Fen and me
