현존하는 나무늘보는 고작 6종에 불과하지만
수천~수백 만 년 전에는
8개 과 50종 이상의 나무늘보 사촌들이 살았습니다.
땅에서는 땅늘보가 활보했는데,
메가테리움처럼 코끼리만한
거대 땅늘보가 있었는가 하면,
나무를 오르내릴 줄 아는 몸길이 1m의
작은 땅늘보, ‘하팔로프스(Hapalops)’와
‘네마테리움(Nematherium)’도 살았죠.
이렇듯 아메리카 대륙에는
각양각색의 (나무)늘보들이 살았는데…
한 가지 신기한 건,
이들 중에는 바다에 사는 늘보도 있었다는 사실이죠.
