🧅 How to Cure Onions for Long-Term Storage

Curing onions is the essential post-harvest process that transforms freshly pulled bulbs into pantry-ready staples that can last for months. Here's how to do it right:

🌿 Step-by-Step Curing Process
Harvest at the Right Time: Wait until 50–75% of the onion tops have naturally fallen over. This signals the bulbs are mature and ready.

Do Not Wash: Leave the dirt on. Washing can introduce moisture that leads to rot.

Dry in a Shaded, Ventilated Area: Lay onions out in a single layer in a dry, shaded space with good airflow. Avoid direct sunlight, which can sunburn the bulbs.

Cure for 2–4 Weeks: Let the onions sit until the necks are dry and the outer skins are papery. This drying process seals the bulb and prevents spoilage2.

Trim and Inspect: Cut off the dried tops and roots. Check for bruises or sprouting—use those bulbs first.
